NDA Nabs Three for Selling Vaccines and Counterfeit Drugs

The National Drug Authority (NDA) has taken decisive action, arresting three people accused of a serious offense: the sale of government-allocated veterinary vaccines and the peddling of counterfeit drugs. Among those detained are two officials from the Ibanda District local government, highlighting a concerning breach of trust.
According to NDA Public Relations Manager, Mr. Abias Rwamwiri, the arrested individuals include an Assistant Veterinary Officer, an Assistant Laboratory Technician who also managed veterinary stores, and a paraveterinary officer operating a private drug shop.
An intelligence-led operation uncovered one suspect in Kyegegwa District actively relabeling veterinary products. This suspect was reportedly replacing official stickers of lower-priced, less potent doses with those indicating higher, more expensive ones. The investigation then led authorities to his accomplices in Ibanda.
Mr. Rwamwiri emphasized the severe consequences of these fraudulent activities. He stated that such actions not only defraud farmers but can also lead them to resort to dangerous practices, potentially harming their livestock. The use of contaminated animal products can also pose risks to human health, with potential links to cancer.
The suspects are currently held at Wandegeya Police Station in Kampala and are expected to face charges related to illegal possession of government stores and classified drugs. The NDA has been conducting similar operations since 2019, recovering an estimated Shs40 billion worth of stolen government medicines and arresting over 100 individuals.
The NDA urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug sales or counterfeit medicines. The authority continues its commitment to safeguarding animal and public health by cracking down on illicit drug trade. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by the NDA to maintain the integrity of the drug supply chain in Uganda.
