An attempted infiltration of Kyegegwa Government Prison has left three prison officers injured and two firearms missing. The incident occurred around 1:00 AM on Friday when a group of unidentified individuals targeted the facility in western Uganda.

According to Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja, the attackers ambushed the officers on duty as sentries for the night shift. The injured officers – Sergeant Warden Titus Kalisa, Sergeant Wardress Susan Margret Nakuya, and Warden Joshua Odongo – were promptly evacuated to Kyegegwa General Hospital for medical attention.

The assailants successfully made off with two service firearms, identified by serial numbers UG PRI 563615124 and UG Pol 565828358. Each weapon was reportedly loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition at the time of the theft.

Despite the security breach and the ensuing chaos, prison authorities confirmed that no inmates escaped from the facility. “Sister security agencies were immediately called in and investigations are underway,” Mr. Baine stated, adding that joint operations are currently in progress to apprehend the suspects and recover the stolen weapons.

Authorities have not yet released details regarding the motive behind the attack, the number of assailants involved, or if any arrests have been made. The Uganda Prisons Service is urging the public to report any information that could lead to the recovery of the firearms or the capture of the perpetrators by contacting the nearest police station or their toll-free line at 0800144144.
