KCCA Engages Nine Private Waste Collectors for National Cleaning Day

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is stepping up its waste management strategy ahead of the National Cleaning Day on August 29. The authority has enlisted nine private waste collectors to manage the anticipated increase in garbage, supplementing KCCA’s existing resources.

KCCA Executive Director, Ms. Sharifah Buzeki, announced that these private collectors will operate across Kampala’s nine constituencies. This initiative aims to ensure that waste generated during the cleaning exercise is collected and evacuated promptly, addressing concerns over accumulating refuse in the city.

Kampala reportedly produces between 2,000 and 2,500 tonnes of waste daily. The newly engaged private collectors, eight of whom have secured operational permits, possess a combined capacity of 1,469 tonnes per day. KCCA’s own fleet can handle approximately 500 tonnes daily, with the ninth private collector expected to add another 200 tonnes, bringing the total potential collection capacity to around 2,169 tonnes per day.

Residents will be encouraged to utilize designated “bring-to-truck” collection points and separate their waste into organic and inorganic materials using a two-bin system. The use of unlicensed waste collectors with handcarts and similar small vehicles will be prohibited to prevent illegal dumping. Division town clerks, ward administrators, and other local officials will collaborate with licensed collectors to establish collection schedules and points, which will be widely communicated.

KCCA also confirmed that the government has allocated funds for 10 new garbage trucks and the first phase of a waste management facility in Buyala, slated for the 2026/2027 financial year. This facility will focus on material recovery and waste repurposing. Under the “polluter-pays” principle, households and businesses will be charged fees for waste collection, with rates varying based on the type of user and waste volume. KCCA will continue to manage waste from public facilities.

Preparations include weekly clean-up activities and sensitisation sessions for local leaders and sanitation committees on new waste evacuation procedures. KCCA urges all residents, businesses, and institutions to participate actively in the National Cleaning Day to foster better public health and a cleaner urban environment.
