Father Urges Court to Jail Son for Abusing Mother in Kitgum

In a distressing turn of events in Kitgum, a father has requested the court to imprison his son, Kenneth Oyoo, aged 28. Michael Acaye stated that a custodial sentence for his son would offer his wife, Santa Angom (72), some peace from Oyoo’s alleged pattern of abuse.
The case stems from an incident in July where Oyoo allegedly hurled vulgar insults at his mother when she declined to serve him tea, explaining it was insufficient for her four orphaned grandchildren. The prosecution contends that Oyoo used demeaning language, demanding his mother leave their matrimonial home and return to her parents, citing his father’s alleged remarriage.
Oyoo, a married mason, denied the charges, appealing to his mother to settle the matter privately as he is her “last born and blood.” However, Angom testified that these threats are not isolated, recounting approximately ten similar demands and frequent instances of her son returning home intoxicated, banging on her door for food, and terrifying the children under her care.
During the court hearing, Acaye sought permission to speak, explaining that his son’s presence at home robs his wife of peace. He implored the magistrate to impose a suitable punishment to allow her respite. Acaye further detailed his son’s history, including dropping out of school, alleged alcoholism, association with criminal gangs, and a previous 20-month prison sentence for assaulting a teacher.
Despite repeated attempts by family and relatives to counsel Oyoo, his behavior has persisted. Chief Magistrate Robert Ekirita acknowledged Acaye’s plea, confirming he will be called as a witness. The hearing has been adjourned to September 1, 2026.
