Eight Medical Interns Remanded to Luzira Over Salary Protest

Eight medical interns are currently held at Luzira Prison following their arrest during a protest on Parliamentary Avenue in Kampala. The group appeared before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court, where they were formally charged with causing a common nuisance.

The interns, who were allegedly carrying placards with messages such as “NO PAY, NO REPORTING” and “PAY ALL MEDICAL INTERNS,” are accused of obstructing traffic on August 12, 2026. Prosecution contends that their demonstration, while dressed in white coats, created danger and inconvenience to road users.

All eight pleaded not guilty to the charges. Their legal representation attempted to move a bail application, citing the interns’ public service roles. However, the prosecution requested time to review identification documents and respond to the bail request.

Magistrate Rophine Achayo acknowledged the prosecution’s right to respond to bail applications and adjourned the hearing to August 17, 2026. This delay resulted in the interns being remanded to Luzira.

The protest highlighted ongoing concerns among medical interns regarding their deployment and salary payments, which they believe are governed by an unfavorable policy.
