Veteran Journalist and Political Commentator Tamale Mirundi Dies at 60

Veteran Ugandan journalist and political commentator Joseph Tamale Mirundi died on August 13, 2024, at Kisubi Hospital at the age of 60. His passing followed a month-long struggle with lung-related complications, bringing to a close a notable career that spanned from selling newspapers to becoming a central figure in Uganda’s political and media circles.

Born in 1964, Mirundi’s early forays into journalism began during his secondary school years. He worked as a newspaper vendor and later as a news assistant at Munno newspaper. After pursuing Mass Communication at Makerere University, he ventured into independent publishing, establishing newspapers like The Voice and Lipoota. His leadership in the field was recognized when he served two terms as president of the Uganda Journalists Association.

A significant shift in his career occurred in 2003 when he was appointed Presidential Press Secretary. He served in this capacity for 13 years, departing State House in 2015 but continuing his association with the presidency as a Senior Presidential Advisor on Media.

Beyond his official roles, Mirundi gained widespread recognition as a sharp political commentator. His television and radio programs, most notably “One on One with Tamale Mirundi” on NBS TV, captivated audiences with his candid analyses, vibrant use of Luganda, and theatrical presentation style. He also explored digital media through Kab News and authored books delving into Ugandan politics, governance, and natural resources.

Mirundi possessed a unique talent for dissecting complex political issues and making them accessible to the general public. His commentary on power, corruption, and political dynamics became a staple in everyday discourse across Uganda. While a steadfast supporter of President Yoweri Museveni, Mirundi was also known for his critiques of government officials and internal power struggles.

His distinctive broadcasting style, characterized by passionate debates, sharp wit, and memorable analogies, solidified his status as an iconic voice in Ugandan political talk shows. Mirundi’s journey from a humble newspaper vendor to a significant media and political influencer marked a remarkable path through Uganda’s public life. His death at 60 leaves a void in the country’s political commentary landscape.
