Two sentenced to death for Eng. Bbosa clan dispute assassination

The High Court has delivered a death sentence to Lujja Bbosa Tabula and Noah Lugya, also known as Fake, for their roles in the assassination of Engineer Daniel Bbosa, the former leader of the Ndiga Clan. The tragic event occurred in February 2024.
Justice David Matovu pronounced the sentence, emphasizing the premeditated and brutal nature of the murder. He stated that the circumstances surrounding the assassination warranted the most severe punishment available under Ugandan law, noting that the motive and the involvement of multiple parties made this a case for the maximum penalty.
While acknowledging that both convicts had pleaded guilty, thereby saving court time, and that they were first-time offenders who showed remorse, the judge found these mitigating factors were significantly outweighed by the calculated and grave nature of the crime.
Evidence presented by the prosecution indicated that Tabula supplied the firearm used in the killing and had tracked Eng. Bbosa to Katosi before the attack. Ballistics later confirmed that the weapon matched spent cartridges found at the crime scene. Eng. Bbosa was shot on February 25, 2024, in Kikandwa village as he was returning home from a clan event.
Justice Matovu used the sentencing to caution the public against resorting to violence to settle disputes and warned against mob justice. He referenced the fate of Enock Sserunkuma, an alleged co-conspirator who was killed by a mob shortly after the assassination. Lugya was also nearly a victim of mob justice but was rescued by security forces.
The court heard that the assassination was linked to a prolonged chieftaincy dispute within the Ndiga Clan, with Tabula reportedly contesting Eng. Bbosa’s leadership. The plot involved disguised motorcycle registration plates and extensive planning meetings.
Tabula and Lugya will await execution as per legal procedure. Three other individuals, Harriet Nakiguli, Joseph Nakabake, and Ezra Mayanja, have pleaded not guilty and are awaiting trial, scheduled to begin on September 8.
