Authorities and the Uganda Police Force have ramped up road safety enforcement along the critical Kampala-Masaka Highway through “Operation Barabara Salaama.” The initiative aims to proactively identify and address road safety violations before they lead to tragic outcomes.
Led by Commissioner of Transport Regulation and Safety Winstone Katushabe and Deputy Director of Traffic and Road Safety ACP Norman Musinga, the operation involves targeted inspections of vehicles and drivers. The primary focus is on buses, taxis, and heavy trucks, given the increased risks associated with vehicles carrying numerous passengers or heavy loads.
The Kampala-Masaka Highway is a vital artery connecting the capital to numerous towns in central and western Uganda. Its high traffic volume necessitates strict adherence to traffic regulations, particularly from commercial transporters who frequently utilize this route.
Enforcement teams are scrutinizing compliance with traffic laws, vehicle safety standards, and other critical requirements for commercial and heavy vehicles. Drivers are reminded of the importance of possessing correct documentation, maintaining vehicles, and adhering to safety standards.
Transport operators are encouraged to ensure their drivers are qualified and that all vehicles undergo regular maintenance and inspections. The operation aligns with broader government efforts to curb road crashes by strengthening enforcement and tackling dangerous driving, a major contributor to road fatalities.
Motorists are urged to exercise patience, observe speed limits, drive responsibly, and heed instructions from enforcement officers. Road safety is emphasized as a collective responsibility involving drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and operators. Through these intensified checks, “Operation Barabara Salaama” seeks to bolster compliance and reduce accidents on this busy corridor.
