Kiboga Prison Murder Trial of Moses Anguyo to Commence August 17

The long-awaited trial of Moses Anguyo, a prison warder accused of a brutal killing spree at Kiboga Central Prison, is scheduled to commence on Monday, August 17, 2026. Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga will preside over the proceedings at the High Court in Kiboga.

Anguyo, along with three alleged accomplices Peter Anziku, Hellen Amviko, and another individual, will face trial for a series of events that occurred on February 23. The accused were committed to the High Court for trial by Kiboga Grade One Magistrate Emmanuel Alioni Drajole on June 17.

Anguyo faces four counts of murder, implicated in the deaths of Prison Officer Bright Akishuri, Sarah Ayebare, Alson Niwagaba, and Assistant Superintendent of Police Hope Catherine. The prosecution alleges that Anguyo acted with malice aforethought, unlawfully causing these deaths. He also faces charges of aggravated robbery and threatening violence, including allegedly robbing a shop and threatening another prison officer.

The co-accused are charged with coordinating and assisting Anguyo to evade arrest and prosecution following the alleged killings, acting to the prejudice of the victims’ families and the administration of justice.

The February incident began with gunfire at the prison, leading to panic. Anguyo allegedly turned his weapon on colleagues before fleeing, subsequently robbing retail shops in Kiboga town. He was apprehended in the Democratic Republic of Congo on March 27 after a joint operation and extradited to Uganda.

The impending trial is of significant interest to the Kiboga community and the families of the deceased, who have been seeking justice and answers since the tragic events. Local leaders have emphasized the importance of timely justice to maintain public trust.
