White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will be departing from her role at the end of August, according to an announcement by President Donald Trump. Leavitt, who became the youngest White House Press Secretary last year at age 28, cited the demands of her position conflicting with her desire to be present for her two young children.

In a social media post, President Trump described Leavitt as one of his “most trusted aides” and stated that he “totally understand[s] and respect[s]” her decision to prioritize family. He also noted that Leavitt will continue to be an important figure, saying she will “now be one of my top outside advisors, and an influential voice within the Republican Party.”

Leavitt, who returned from maternity leave in May after welcoming her second child, a daughter, expressed on X that her time as Press Secretary has been “the honor and adventure of a lifetime.” She explained that balancing the demanding role with motherhood has been challenging, and she feels she cannot be the “best mom” her children deserve while fulfilling the duties of the position.

Leavitt has a history of working with President Trump, including roles as an assistant press secretary and speech writer during his first term. She later served as communications director for Representative Elise Stefanik before unsuccessfully running for Congress in New Hampshire in 2022. She also worked as a spokesperson for the pro-Trump group Maga Inc. and as national press secretary for his 2024 campaign.

Her tenure as Press Secretary was marked by a sometimes contentious relationship with the media, often accusing reporters of bias. However, she was also praised by Trump supporters for her consistent defense of the administration’s policies. Leavitt’s departure makes her the second-longest serving press secretary under Trump, following Sarah Huckabee Sanders. It remains unclear who will succeed her.
