Dozens feared dead as ferry capsizes on Lake Kariba

A devastating ferry disaster has struck Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba, claiming the lives of at least 44 individuals. The vessel overturned on Tuesday, leading to a significant loss of life.

Authorities reported that the ferry, with a stated capacity of 90 passengers and five crew, was carrying approximately 120 people, including 12 children. The exact number on board is still being clarified, with ticket sales indicating 114 adult passengers and an unknown number of younger children.

Eyewitnesses and officials suggest that the tragedy may have been caused by adverse weather conditions, with a strong wave reportedly hitting the ferry and causing it to capsize. One witness described the scene as distressing, with bodies visible in the water.

In response to the crisis, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a state of disaster to facilitate the mobilization of all necessary resources for the intensive search and rescue efforts. These operations involve a joint effort including an army boat squadron, a police sub-aqua unit, and a privately owned helicopter.

Lake Kariba, a vast man-made reservoir shared with Zambia, is a crucial waterway for transportation, fishing, and hydroelectric power. The government has expressed its deepest condolences to the families affected by this heartbreaking incident. So far, 77 individuals have been successfully rescued from the lake.
