Ugandan Courts See Major Rulings: From Murder Sentences to Record-Breaking Fundraisers

The Ugandan judicial system has been a hive of activity, with landmark decisions made across various legal domains. Last week saw the conclusion of a significant chapter in the 2018 kidnapping and murder of accountant Susan Magara, with the High Court handing down sentences to nine individuals convicted for their roles.

Justice Alex Mackay Ajiji delivered the verdict, sentencing Hajarah Nakandi and Abbas Musa Buvumbo to death for their direct involvement in Magara’s abduction, torture, and eventual murder. Seven others, including Yusuf Lubega and twins Hussein Wasswa and Hassan Kato Miiro, received life imprisonment sentences for their participation in the criminal enterprise. The court described the crimes as “horrific, brutal, callous, premeditated, calculated and pre-planned,” fitting the category of “rarest of the rare” cases.

In a separate commercial case, a Shs 68 million claim against Stanbic Bank was dismissed. The court found that the customer, Nakku Joweria, failed to prove the bank breached its duty of care concerning unauthorized withdrawals from her account via the Flexipay platform. The judge noted inconsistencies in her reporting of a lost phone and concluded that the transactions followed the bank’s standard authentication processes.

General Edward Katumba Wamala, Minister for Public Service, also testified in the High Court’s International Crimes Division regarding the 2021 assassination attempt that claimed the lives of his daughter and driver. His testimony is part of the prosecution’s case against six men accused of the attack.

Furthermore, former Parliament Director of Communications, Chris Obore, and six other parliamentary officials have been committed to the High Court to face charges of corruption, including embezzlement and money laundering, related to an alleged Shs 27.2 billion loss to the government.

In a notable display of public support, Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo’s fundraising appeal to cover a Shs 30 million contempt of court fine, imposed by the High Court in a case involving Kampala International University, exceeded its target within 48 hours. Well-wishers rallied to support the lecturer, activist, and cartoonist, raising the required sum in less than two days.
