SDA faithful get exemption for national cleaning day to observe Sabbath

The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) community in Uganda has been granted an exemption from the national cleaning day activities, allowing them to participate on Sunday instead of the official Saturday date. This adjustment is to accommodate their religious observance of the Sabbath, which falls on Saturdays.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja announced the arrangement, stating that the SDA faithful will remain at home during the designated cleaning hours on Saturday. They will proceed to their places of worship after 10:00 AM and will undertake their cleaning duties on the following day. Leaders within the SDA community are advised to oversee these rescheduled activities.

The decision follows guidance from President Museveni, aiming to ensure the Adventist community can contribute to national sanitation efforts while adhering to their religious commitments. The national cleaning day, established as a permanent program following a successful inaugural event, is intended to foster a cleaner Uganda.

The next national cleaning day is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, from 7 AM to 10 AM, with main events in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, and coordinated nationwide. Movement restrictions will be in place during the cleaning hours, with specific exemptions for essential services. The government is also emphasizing improved waste management, urging proper disposal and segregation, and directing local leaders to designate collection points and ensure cleaning materials are available.

This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to environmental cleanliness and its willingness to adapt national programs to accommodate the diverse religious practices of its citizens.
