Man Arrested for Allegedly Attempting to Bribe UPDF Officers with Shs20,000

During an ongoing Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) recruitment drive in Masindi District, a 20-year-old man, identified as Emmanuel Kyakabaale Tayebwa, was arrested on suspicion of bribery.
The recruitment team, led by Brigadier Rogers Kitwala, reported that Kyakabaale was initially disqualified because he could not present his Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) certificate, only offering a Primary Seven certificate and a Senior Four pass slip.
Further issues arose when Kyakabaale presented a scanned Ordinary Level certificate on his phone. Discrepancies were noted between the name on his academic documents, “Kyakabaale Emmanuel,” and that on his National Identity Card, “Emmanuel Kyakaale Tatwebwa.” Brigadier Kitwala stated that Kyakabaale then allegedly offered Shs20,000 to four verification officers, claiming it was for water.
The UPDF is conducting a recruitment exercise across the Bunyoro sub-region, aiming to enlist both professional and regular officers. The exercise has seen numerous applicants disqualified due to documentation issues, name discrepancies, and medical grounds.
Brigadier Kitwala cautioned applicants against submitting forged or altered documents, emphasizing that any attempt at bribery or undue influence would lead to arrest and prosecution. The UPDF intends to recruit a significant number of individuals from the eight districts comprising the Bunyoro sub-region, urging all participants to present genuine credentials.
