Four Dead, Over 10 Hospitalized After Burial Meal in Rakai

Tragedy has struck in Rakai and Lyantonde districts after a burial feast led to a severe illness outbreak, resulting in four deaths and over ten hospitalizations. The incident occurred after mourners consumed beef served at the funeral of a man identified only as Umar.

Three of the deceased have been identified as Charles Bangirana, Jennifer Ntejerize, and Christmas Behekanira, all residents of Rakai District. The identity of the fourth victim remains unconfirmed.

Masaka Region Police spokesperson, SP Twaha Kasirye, stated that preliminary investigations strongly suggest the meat is the source of the illness. “Almost everyone who ate from this cow has developed health complications,” Kasirye noted, adding that reports indicate others are seeking traditional remedies at home.

Bodies have been transported to Lyantonde Hospital for postmortem examinations, while the affected individuals are receiving treatment. Police have collected samples for laboratory analysis to pinpoint the exact cause of the deaths.

While awaiting lab results, authorities are exploring the possibility of anthrax, a bacterial infection that can spread to humans through infected animals or their meat. This suspected outbreak has prompted a joint effort between health and security teams from both Rakai and Lyantonde.

The response teams are working to assess the scale of the illness and prevent further fatalities. Police are urging anyone who consumed the meat and is experiencing symptoms to seek immediate medical attention. The incident also brings back concerns of anthrax, following a previous outbreak in the neighboring Kyotera District in 2024.

Authorities are actively monitoring the affected communities as laboratory tests are conducted to confirm if anthrax is responsible for these recent deaths. The region has also seen several cattle quarantines due to livestock diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease in recent months.
