Alupo Urges Youth to Shun Idleness, Embrace Wealth Creation

Vice President Jessica Alupo has issued a strong call to action for Uganda’s youth, urging them to move away from idleness and reliance on handouts. Speaking in a message commemorating International Youth Day, Alupo highlighted that the government has established essential infrastructure, market access, and financial programs specifically designed to empower young people to generate wealth and create jobs.

She specifically pointed to initiatives like Emyooga, the Parish Development Model (PDM), and the Youth Fund. Alupo stressed that these programs are not for immediate consumption or decorative purposes but serve as crucial “seed capital” intended to fuel income-generating activities and ultimately transform livelihoods.

The Vice President acknowledged that the government has worked to overcome past economic hindrances, such as inadequate infrastructure, limited markets, and instability. She noted the significant expansion of Uganda’s domestic market and access to broader regional markets, presenting substantial opportunities for young entrepreneurs.

Alupo encouraged the youth to actively engage in sectors like commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT to capitalize on these advantages. She cautioned that while government development projects like roads and schools are vital, they do not automatically translate into personal wealth, which stems from productive economic engagement.

Furthermore, Alupo warned against destructive behaviors such as drug abuse, excessive alcohol consumption, and promiscuity, stating they undermine health, productivity, and economic contribution. She implored young people to acquire practical skills, form groups, and utilize available funding to become active wealth creators, citing Japan’s success through discipline and hard work as an inspiring example.

With Uganda’s abundant natural resources, favorable climate, young population, and peace, Alupo concluded that no Ugandan should remain idle, aligning with the International Youth Day theme of “Empowering Young People for Inclusive Wealth.” She urged the youth to become active contributors to a self-reliant economy rather than mere “leisure seekers.”
