The Ministry of Health in Uganda has introduced a new Nutrition Profile Model designed to pinpoint processed foods containing high levels of sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. This critical measure comes as the nation confronts a growing health crisis linked to diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
The model establishes specific thresholds for five key nutrients of concern: total sugars, salt, saturated fats, trans fats, and overall fat content. By defining these limits, the government intends to guide efforts to regulate the marketing of food products that exceed recommended nutritional standards.
This initiative aligns with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) guidelines for the African region, aiming to empower consumers with better information for making healthier food choices. The move is a response to mounting evidence connecting increased consumption of processed foods to conditions like obesity and other NCDs.
A survey conducted by the ministry across 14 districts revealed significant findings: 56% of processed foods, including snacks, exceeded recommended sodium levels, while 48% contained excessive sugar, and 46% were high in saturated fats. These statistics underscore the urgent need for regulatory action.
The model also flags the presence of non-sugar sweeteners as a potential health concern. Officials noted the pervasive nature of food marketing, particularly through digital platforms, which often targets children, exacerbating the challenge of promoting healthier eating habits.
While the model is a significant step, the Ministry acknowledges the absence of a current legal enforcement mechanism. Efforts are underway to establish a legal framework to ensure compliance. Experts emphasize the need for public education alongside regulatory measures to create a food environment where healthier options are more accessible and affordable.
