NRM Dominates Mukono Parish Elections, Securing 80 of 97 Seats

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has solidified its local leadership in Mukono district by capturing 80 of the 97 available parish chairperson seats. These elections, conducted under strict security measures, were largely reported as peaceful, with no formal petitions filed against the declared outcomes.

According to the Mukono District Returning Officer, George William Eliau, the NRM secured approximately 82% of the contest, while independent candidates managed to win 11 seats. The National Unity Platform (NUP) secured five positions, and the Democratic Party (DP) won two.

The NRM’s victory mirrors its strong performance in the preceding women’s council elections, where the party clinched 92 out of 97 chairperson positions. Across all positions within the parish committees, the NRM secured an impressive 94% of the available slots.

In several individual races, NRM candidates like Stephen Kiggudu and John Baptist Wamala demonstrated significant support. Voters often cited the candidates’ involvement in government programs, particularly the Parish Development Model (PDM), as a key factor in their success. Newly elected officials have pledged to prioritize community development and service delivery, urging a focus beyond political affiliations.

Despite the NRM’s dominant showing, some defeated candidates from opposition parties raised concerns about alleged voter inducement. These claims suggest that financial incentives may have influenced the electoral process in certain areas, prompting calls for further investigation. The NRM, however, praised voters for selecting capable leaders expected to effectively implement government initiatives.
