Karamoja Food Relief: Over Half Delivered Amidst Challenges

The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has announced that a substantial portion of the government’s relief food supplies has reached the Karamoja sub-region, with over 61% of the planned 9.4 million kilograms delivered since the initiative began on July 20.

Currently, the distribution covers 220 parishes and benefits 141,734 households. Reports indicate that delivery percentages vary across the nine districts, with Moroto receiving 100% of its allocation and Abim at 45%. The OPM is working to expedite the delivery process to vulnerable households facing acute food insecurity.

Karamoja is grappling with a severe food crisis, affecting an estimated 473,000 people. This situation is attributed to consecutive droughts, escalating food prices, and insecurity, which have depleted local food reserves and led to alarming malnutrition rates among children and adults.

Despite the progress, the OPM has identified several challenges hindering the full implementation of the relief program. These include a shortage of adequate government fleet capacity for the planned tonnage, pressure on initial logistics, poor road conditions, vehicle breakdowns, and the need for more efficient coordination with local district officials.

The OPM, in partnership with the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), Uganda Prisons Service, Uganda Police Force, and local governments, is seeking additional resources. They are requesting more serviceable trucks, continuous operational funding, and enhanced coordination to ensure all targeted households receive the aid without diversion or misuse.
