Colombia is grappling with the aftermath of a significant earthquake, registering a magnitude of 7.4, which has resulted in at least 132 fatalities and left over 480 individuals injured. The quake struck at a depth of 103 kilometers in Chocó province, with its tremors felt across a vast area of western Colombia.
The city of Pereira, situated approximately 55 kilometers from the epicenter, has reported the most severe damage, with at least 40 deaths and numerous buildings collapsing. Videos from the city’s central Plaza Bolívar depict scenes of destruction, with debris scattered and dust clouds rising from fallen structures.
Emergency measures have been enacted, including a curfew in affected parts of Pereira, as rescue efforts continue. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as more people are believed to be trapped under the rubble.
Other areas hard-hit include Cali, where 32 buildings collapsed, and Manizales, which reported at least two deaths. Smaller tremors and damage were noted in cities like Medellín and Quibdó, as well as across the Chocó and Valle del Cauca regions.
President Abelardo de la Espriella, who recently took office, has declared a national disaster, granting special powers to manage the emergency response and reallocate necessary funds. Over 1,500 homes have been reported damaged.
International support has begun to arrive, with the United States, the European Union, and El Salvador offering assistance and monitoring the situation. Despite the significant damage, the epicenter near San José del Palmar experienced no casualties, a small relief amidst the widespread devastation.
