Besigye's Health Under Control of Prisons Medical Team, Spokesperson Asserts

The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has provided an update on the health condition of detained opposition leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye. According to UPS spokesperson Frank Baine, Besigye was discharged from Mulago National Referral Hospital on August 7, 2026, after a ten-day admission, and has since returned to the Luzira Prisons Hospital.

In a statement released on August 11, 2026, Mr. Baine confirmed that Besigye is continuing his treatment under the direct supervision of the UPS medical team. “The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) medical team is fully in charge as he continues with treatment and his health condition is steadily improving,” Baine stated.

He also emphasized that Besigye’s immediate family members and his personal doctors are being granted access to him. The UPS spokesperson urged the public to disregard any circulating misinformation regarding Besigye’s whereabouts or health status, describing such reports as “misinformation and disinformation.”

This update comes after a period of heightened concern following Besigye’s collapse in court on July 29, 2026. He was subsequently admitted to Mulago Hospital, sparking controversy over his transfer back to Luzira Prison on August 5, 2026. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, and his political platform, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), had raised serious concerns about his condition and the decision to return him to a facility they deemed ill-equipped for his ongoing care.

The PFF had characterized the transfer as a “forcible evacuation” and expressed fears for his life, demanding his release and transfer abroad for specialized treatment. The UPS statement aims to allay these concerns by assuring the public of their comprehensive medical management of Dr. Besigye’s case.
