Seventeen suspects have been arrested by the police in relation to the killing of David Owori, a former captain and defender for the football club SC Villa. Owori was attacked and robbed in Kampala on August 5, succumbing to his injuries later.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala stated that the arrested individuals include three suspected promoters of stolen mobile phones, five primary suspects, and nine associates. Preliminary police findings suggest the main suspects were part of a gang that used paving blocks to attack members of the public.
During questioning, the key suspects reportedly named several accomplices, which led to the subsequent arrests. Police say the gang operated in areas including Nsambya, Nabisaalu, Kirombe, and Makindye on the night of the attack. Owori was reportedly robbed of two mobile phones, a basic handset and an iPhone 14 Pro Max, before being rushed to Case Hospital, where he later died.
The football community is mourning the loss of Owori, a significant figure for SC Villa and previously part of the Uganda Cranes squad. His death has amplified concerns about the rising violent street robberies in Kampala.
Authorities are continuing efforts to apprehend any remaining suspects linked to the group and are investigating potential connections to other robbery incidents in the city. The incident has prompted discussions on strengthening security measures and improving street lighting in affected areas.
