UPDF Confirms Retirement of 19 Generals, Hundreds More Exiting Service

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is set to see a significant number of personnel transition from active service, with 19 general officers leading the group. This retirement exercise encompasses individuals from the highest ranks down to privates, marking a regular turnover within the armed forces.

Among the prominent general officers cleared for retirement is Gen. Katumba Wamala, who also serves as the Minister for Public Service. Other notable figures include Lt. Gen. Charles Awany Otema and Lt. Gen. Charles Angina, alongside several Major Generals and Brigadier Generals. The exact date for the ceremonial send-off of these generals is yet to be announced, ensuring they receive a dignified farewell befitting their years of service.

In total, 19 general officers, 222 senior officers, 205 junior officers, and 1,364 soldiers will be retiring. Ceremonies for senior officers from the rank of Major to Colonel are scheduled to take place at the Joint Services Headquarters in Mbuya. The UPDF highlighted that these events celebrate the sacrifice, patriotism, and dedication of all retiring personnel who have contributed to national sovereignty and regional stability.

Ahead of their exit, the UPDF has been conducting financial literacy training for the outgoing officers. Officials have advised retirees to focus on maintaining steady income streams and to avoid hasty decisions like selling assets, emphasizing the importance of careful financial planning to manage life after receiving a regular salary and allowances.

The UPDF regulations stipulate mandatory retirement ages, typically 65 for generals and lieutenant generals, and 62 for major generals. This process aligns with the force’s objective to foster a professional and modern military while acknowledging the invaluable contributions of its long-serving members. The army also recently launched a recruitment drive to fill vacancies created by these and other departures.
