Mock examinations are a routine feature for candidate classes in Ugandan schools, designed to simulate the high-stakes environment of national assessments like those set by the Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb).

Educators largely defend these tests, arguing they are crucial for gauging student preparedness and allowing for targeted revision. Mr. James Lubega, head of the Mathematics Department at Kings College Budo, states that mocks serve as essential rehearsals, enabling candidates to practice and identify weak areas. His school administers two sets of mocks before the final Uneb examinations.

Beyond practice, mock exams are seen as a vital assessment tool. Mr. Hasadu Kirabira, chairperson of the National Private Educational Institutions Association Uganda, explains that mocks measure learning attainment, reflect teaching quality, and allow schools to benchmark against national standards. They provide a comprehensive evaluation of syllabus coverage and student understanding.

However, the pressure associated with these exams is undeniable. Learners often experience heightened stress, anxiety, and fear of failure. Mr. Gerald Mujasi, headteacher at Nakasero Primary School, attributes much of this stress to inadequate preparation, including incomplete syllabus coverage and last-minute cramming.

To mitigate this, stakeholders are urged to fulfill their roles proactively. Teachers and administrators must ensure timely syllabus completion, consistent supervision, and encourage regular student attendance and revision. Mr. Mujasi emphasizes that collaboration among parents, teachers, and school administrators is key to reducing pressure and fostering a more supportive learning environment.

Despite the stress, proponents argue that the practice gained from mocks helps students develop coping mechanisms for test anxiety, ultimately boosting their confidence and performance in the final national examinations.
