Man Fatally Shot in Bukwo After Allegedly Attacking Police Officers

Police in Bukwo District are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on August 8, 2026, after a man allegedly attacked officers attempting to execute an arrest. The incident took place in Chemusebe Village, Kapchemoken Parish, Brim Sub-County.
According to Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke, officers from Giriki Police Station in Kween District, accompanied by local law enforcement and an area-familiar officer, proceeded to Bukwo to arrest an individual. Upon arrival, the suspect reportedly fled his motorcycle, which was subsequently impounded.
While officers were engaged with community members claiming the motorcycle, a man identified as Mutakan approached them armed with a panga and stones. Despite warnings and attempts by his mother and bystanders to de-escalate the situation, Mutakan allegedly struck an officer with a stone and continued his aggressive advance. Warning shots were fired, but the suspect persisted, leading officers to discharge their firearms.
Mutakan was transported to Bukwo General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. ACP Rusoke stated that the circumstances of the shooting are under investigation, with four individuals, including the involved officers, currently being questioned to determine if the force used was lawful and proportionate.
Police have urged the public against confronting or attempting to disarm officers on duty, emphasizing the serious risks involved. This incident occurs amidst a backdrop of similar violent encounters between communities and law enforcement in Uganda, including recent fatalities of police officers in Ibanda and Oyam Districts.
Rusoke encouraged citizens to resolve grievances through legal channels and assured that the police force is committed to investigating misconduct while ensuring officer safety. “The investigation will establish the circumstances under which the firearms were discharged and whether the force used was lawful, necessary, and proportionate,” he said.
