Banyala Celebrate 18th Ssabanyala Coronation Amidst Funding and Land Disputes

The Banyala people are set to commemorate the 18th coronation anniversary of their cultural leader, Ssabanyala Maj (rtd) Baker Kimeze Mpagi Byarufu II. The celebration, scheduled for August 16 at Ibaale Palace in Bbaale Town, Kayunga District, is anticipated to be attended by President Yoweri Museveni as the chief guest.

This significant occasion, however, unfolds against a backdrop of persistent challenges that are hindering the cultural kingdom’s progress. Kingdom Premier Rev. Wilson Galimaka highlighted these issues during a recent thanksgiving service, emphasizing that the Banyala are a community with a documented history dating back to 1889, dispelling notions of its recent creation.

Rev. Galimaka also addressed rumors of a new Ssabanyala, firmly stating that Baker Kimeze remains the sole and rightful leader. He urged the Banyala to embrace unity and mutual respect with other ethnic groups, stressing that no tribe is superior.

Among the pressing concerns is the stalled construction of a Shs 2 billion kingdom office block, which began seven years ago due to insufficient funding. The lack of adequate office space is reportedly hampering the kingdom’s administrative functions and its ability to serve its subjects effectively. The kingdom spokesperson, Mr. Samuel Bukenya, noted that past attempts to secure office space were unsuccessful.

Furthermore, the kingdom is facing difficulties in reacquiring assets, including land and buildings in Bugerere County, which were supposed to be returned according to a 2013 Memorandum of Understanding. The failure to secure these assets, reportedly held by the Buganda Kingdom, impedes socio-economic development initiatives planned for the Banyala people.

Despite these obstacles, the organizing committee, led by Mr. Joseph Ouma, is appealing to all Banyala subjects to attend the anniversary in large numbers, aiming to make this year’s celebration a memorable one.
