UPDF Commander Urges Retirees to Invest Wisely, Avoid Squandering Benefits

Maj. Gen. Keith Katungi, Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, has issued a stern warning to Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel retiring from active service. During a ceremony at Achol Pii Barracks in Pader District, where 119 soldiers were discharged, Katungi implored the retirees to exercise prudence with their retirement benefits.

He noted that some former soldiers fall prey to poor financial decisions shortly after receiving their packages, leading to hardship. “Avoid temporary madness when money enters your accounts. Some of you, when you receive money, the mind leaves the body,” Katungi advised, urging them to “cool down” and use their funds wisely.

The UPDF has equipped these soldiers with financial literacy training to aid their transition into civilian life. Katungi also cautioned the retirees to be wary of community members who might seek to exploit their newfound financial standing. “This is your money. Avoid the boys in the communities who are waiting to feast on your money,” he stated.

Katungi expressed gratitude for the retirees’ service, framing retirement not as an end but as a new beginning. He highlighted expanded welfare support for veterans, including medical care, educational opportunities, and access to services like Wazalendo SACCO.

Col. Gai Fraser Mpadwa, Deputy Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, lauded the retirees’ dedication, sacrifice, and patriotism. He encouraged them to remain ambassadors of discipline and leverage their experiences in civilian life.

Pader District LC5 Chairperson Isaac Ojok Juma praised the UPDF for maintaining regional peace, which fosters economic activity. He urged the retirees to utilize government programs like the Parish Development Model and engage in productive sectors to contribute to national economic transformation.
