Kikandwa Village in Mukono District recently hosted a thanksgiving service for General Edward Katumba Wamala, marking his impending retirement from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) after an extensive 47-year career.

The service, attended by a diverse group of leaders, clergy, and community members, celebrated Gen. Katumba’s dedication and service to the nation. Mukono Diocese Emeritus Bishop Jackson Matovu officiated, highlighting the rarity and significance of honouring a leader while they are still alive and actively contributing.

Bishop Matovu emphasized that while Gen. Katumba is retiring from military service, his expertise and commitment are still highly valued within the Mukono community and beyond. He called for strengthened community service programs to address public needs, including healthcare and sanitation.

Various regional and local leaders, including State Minister for Fisheries Robert Migadde Ndugwa and Mukono District Chairperson Francis Lukooya Lukoome, praised Gen. Katumba’s humility, dedication, and love for Uganda, calling him an inspiration to younger generations.

In his address, Gen. Katumba expressed gratitude for the heartfelt recognition, noting that such acknowledgements are often reserved for after one’s passing. He encouraged Ugandans to support and uplift one another regardless of their social standing.

Gen. Katumba joined the military in May 1979 and has held several significant positions, including Inspector General of Police, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), and Minister of Works and Transport. He currently serves as the Minister of Public Service.

He is scheduled to officially retire alongside 18 other UPDF general officers at a date yet to be announced. His transition marks the end of a long and distinguished military career, with expectations of continued public service.
