Ugandan Parliament Approves UPDF Deployment to Gaza

Lawmakers in Uganda’s Parliament have given the green light for the deployment of UPDF soldiers to the Gaza Strip. The decision follows a government motion, presented by the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka, which sought parliamentary approval to send troops as part of an international stabilization mission in the Middle East.

The approved motion cites Uganda’s constitutional obligations and international commitments, particularly its role in promoting regional and international peace and security. The UPDF contingent is expected to operate under strict humanitarian principles, maintaining neutrality, adhering to international humanitarian law, and focusing on civilian protection without engaging in political disputes. The mission is sanctioned under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2788 (2025).

Despite the approval, several legislators raised concerns regarding the process and timing of the motion. Some argued for more time to scrutinize the proposal and review past peacekeeping commitments. Questions were also raised about the specific risks associated with urban warfare in Gaza and the need for detailed information on troop welfare and family support.

However, UPDF representatives, including Maj. Gen. Henry Masiko and Maj. Gen. David Gonyi, defended the deployment. They highlighted Uganda’s growing international reputation for contributing to stability and argued that participation in such missions enhances the professionalism of the UPDF. The deployment is seen as an opportunity for Uganda to fulfill its moral and diplomatic obligations on the global stage.
