A devastating shooting incident in Bangkok’s outskirts, perpetrated by a 14-year-old, has prompted Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to vow the introduction of tighter gun control legislation. The attack resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and left 22 injured, with 14 still hospitalized, seven in critical condition.

The perpetrator began by fatally shooting his grandparents at their shared residence before proceeding to Debsirin School, where he was a student. There, he claimed the lives of five teachers and a student before taking his own life. Authorities confirmed the weapon used was legally registered and belonged to the teen’s grandfather.

Prime Minister Charnvirakul expressed deep sorrow, stating the tragedy “shouldn’t have happened” and questioned how such an event could occur in Thailand. The proposed new laws would restrict the carrying of firearms in public, permitting only on-duty government officials to possess guns.

Thailand grapples with a high rate of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia, with millions of firearms in circulation, many illegally. While the country has stringent laws against illegal arms possession, enforcement has been a persistent challenge. This incident is likely to renew focus on the effectiveness of existing gun control measures and the implementation of new, stricter regulations.

The teenager reportedly spent considerable time playing violent video games and had shown no prior indication of planning such an attack, according to a family member. Investigations revealed videos related to school shootings in the US on his devices, suggesting a potential influence, though the attack itself was described as “well prepared” with “clear steps and clear goals.”

This event underscores ongoing concerns about gun violence and the need for effective preventative measures. The Prime Minister’s commitment to introducing stricter laws signals a potential shift in the nation’s approach to firearm regulation.
