Parliament Demands Probe into Footballer David Owori's Death

A pall has been cast over Ugandan football following the tragic death of national team player David Owori. Owori, who also represented local club SC Villa, was fatally attacked by unknown assailants near Kibuye Primary School in Kampala on Tuesday evening. He later succumbed to his injuries at Case Hospital.

During a parliamentary session on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, expressed grave concern over the incident, labeling it a “fundamentally a security matter.” He highlighted the alarming trend of criminals using blunt objects like iron bars to attack citizens.

The Chief Opposition Whip, Hon. Paul Mwiru, brought the matter to the floor, urging the government to provide an official statement. In response, the Third Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Rukia Isanga Nakadama, conveyed the government’s condolences to Owori’s family and assured Parliament that a formal response would follow consultations.

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa implored the Executive to direct the Ministry of Internal Affairs and security agencies to swiftly investigate the circumstances of Owori’s death. He stressed the need for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and for a broader review of the security challenges plaguing the nation. Tayebwa pointed out that while Owori’s prominent status brought attention to his case, many ordinary citizens also fall victim to similar violent crimes without public notice.
