KCCA Boosts Garbage Collection Fleet, Urges End to Roadside Dumping

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is implementing a new strategy to tackle the growing issue of waste accumulation in the city. Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki announced that the authority is finalizing arrangements to increase the number of garbage trucks, aiming to ensure every area has a dedicated vehicle for waste collection.

Buzeki urged residents to cooperate by storing their waste properly and waiting for the scheduled collection. This directive comes as a direct response to the prevalent practice of dumping rubbish along roadsides.

“We are finalizing the arrangements for the trucks that will be collecting garbage. Every area will have a truck, and we want people to ensure that their garbage is properly kept until the truck comes to collect it,” Buzeki stated during a recent event in Nakawa.

KCCA emphasized that roadside dumping will no longer be tolerated. The authority highlighted that this practice not only pollutes the environment but also significantly contributes to blocked drainage channels, increasing the risk of urban flooding, especially during the rainy season.

“We cannot allow people to continue putting garbage along the roads because when it rains, the garbage is washed into the drainage channels and blocks them, which can lead to flooding,” she added.

To facilitate the new system, KCCA plans to collaborate with local leaders to coordinate collection schedules and inform residents about when and where waste will be picked up.

Meanwhile, residents of Nakawa also brought forth concerns regarding sanitation, particularly a shortage of public toilets, and called for KCCA’s intervention to prevent potential disease outbreaks. They also raised issues concerning PDM beneficiaries being evicted from roadside vending spaces, requesting assistance in finding alternative locations for these traders.
