Subaru Driver Arrested in Lugazi Over Gunfire-Like Exhaust Noises

Panic gripped Lugazi Municipality on Thursday night when a Subaru driver’s vehicle emitted loud, explosive sounds akin to gunshots. The driver, operating a Subaru with registration UBH 104B, was reportedly revving a modified exhaust system as he drove through residential areas.

The disruptive noise caused significant fear among locals and disturbed patients in nearby medical facilities, prompting residents to contact security forces. Ssezibwa Region Police spokesperson Hellen Butoto confirmed the arrest, stating that the sounds ignited fears of an ongoing armed robbery or shootout.

“The suspect was driving through Lugazi Town while producing loud explosive sounds similar to gunshots at a time when most residents were asleep,” Ms. Butoto explained. “The noise also disrupted patients receiving treatment in nearby health facilities.”

Buikwe Resident District Commissioner, Rtd. Maj. David Matovu, and District Police Commander, Mr. Innocent Tumusiime, led the operation to track down and impound the vehicle, eventually leading to the driver’s arrest.

Further investigations revealed that the driver was also allegedly speeding on the Kampala–Jinja Highway and operating a vehicle deemed to be in a dangerous mechanical condition. The suspect is currently detained at Lugazi Police Station, awaiting charges related to noise pollution and traffic violations.

Police have issued a strong warning to motorists against such illegal exhaust modifications that disturb public peace, citing Uganda’s National Environment (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations, 2003, which classify excessive noise as a threat to health and public order.
