Record Seven Bishops, Including Archbishop Kaziimba, to Retire in 2027

A significant transition is on the horizon for the Church of Uganda, as it anticipates the retirement of a record number of bishops in August 2027. The mandatory retirement age of 65 will see seven bishops, including the Most Rev. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and Bishop of Kampala Diocese, step down from their roles.

The announcement was made during the 28th Provincial Assembly at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono. This marks the largest group of bishops to retire simultaneously in the church’s history.

Joining Archbishop Kaziimba in retirement will be the Rt. Rev. Dan Zoreka (Kinkiizi Diocese), the Rt. Rev. Dr. Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa (Ankole Diocese), the Rt. Rev. Patrick Wakula (Central Busoga Diocese), the Rt. Rev. John Wilson Nandaah (Mbale Diocese), the Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna (Kigezi Diocese), and the Rt. Rev. Amos Magezi (North West Ankole Diocese).

Archbishop Kaziimba, who was elected as the 9th Archbishop in August 2019 and consecrated in March 2020, is currently undertaking a pastoral and farewell tour across the province. The Church of Uganda’s constitution clearly outlines that bishops and archbishops must retire at age 65. Candidates for bishop must be at least 45 years old, hold a theology degree, or another degree with a theological postgraduate qualification. For archbishop, candidates must be serving diocesan bishops, at least 50 years old, and not yet at the retirement age during the election year.

The Church of Uganda currently oversees 39 dioceses, with Namirembe Diocese being the oldest, established in 1897. This upcoming retirement period signifies a notable shift in leadership for the church.
