Five remanded for drug offenses as police target youth hotspots in Tororo

A recent crackdown on illicit drug activity in Tororo has resulted in the remand of five young men to Tororo Main Prison. The accused, whose ages range from 20 to 30, appeared before the Tororo Grade One Magistrate’s Court facing charges of illegal narcotics possession and frequenting a place used for smoking drugs.

According to prosecution, the men were apprehended on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Children’s Lions Park in Tororo Municipality. They were allegedly found with marijuana, which police suspect was intended for local distribution. The park has been a long-standing concern for local authorities, identified as a common gathering spot for individuals involved in illicit activities.

The accused denied frequenting a narcotics joint, claiming they were engaged in legitimate business, such as selling calendars. However, Magistrate David Grace Wanda denied them bail, citing incomplete documentation, including the absence of National Identity Cards and letters from local council leaders.

This operation is part of a broader intelligence-led sweep targeting youth drug hotspots across urban areas. High youth unemployment and socio-economic pressures are often cited as contributing factors to rising drug dependency in such locations. Police have vowed to continue these crackdowns throughout the region and urged the public to report any suspected drug peddling to aid in combating the growing threat of substance abuse among young people.
