Over 3,500 to Receive Free Surgical Care in Greater Buganda Camp

Thousands of Ugandans in the Greater Buganda region are expected to benefit from life-changing free surgical interventions during the upcoming annual surgical camp. Organized by the Association of Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU), the initiative aims to deliver a comprehensive range of surgical services, including general, advanced, specialized, preventive, and curative procedures.
This year’s camp, targeting over 3,500 patients, will focus on common surgical needs such as hernia repairs, hydrocelectomies, hemorrhoidectomies, and the removal of various cysts and masses. The Greater Buganda region, encompassing districts like Luwero, Nakaseke, Nakasongola, and Kiboga, was chosen after previous camps were held in Lango, Ankole, and West Nile.
Dr. Christine Namugenyi, ASOU’s president-elect, highlighted the camp’s 27-year history of transforming lives by bringing essential surgical care to remote and underserved communities. “This year, with a target of treating over 3,500 people, there is hope that livelihoods will be changed in the districts across the Greater Buganda region,” she stated.
Preparations have been bolstered by a significant donation of 30,000 pairs of surgical gloves, valued at Shs18 million, from East African Medical Vitals (EAMV). EAMV Managing Director Brian Kavuya emphasized the company’s commitment to patient safety and expanding access to quality surgical care through its partnership with ASOU.
ASOU President Dr. Edward Kakungulu expressed gratitude for the private sector’s continued support, which is crucial for sustaining these annual camps. The outreach is a flagship program for ASOU, dedicated to reducing the burden of untreated surgical conditions and enhancing local healthcare systems through skill-sharing and mentorship.
