Nebbi Secures Shs16.5 Billion for Modern Transport Hub

Nebbi Municipality is set to undergo a major transformation with the approval of Shs16.5 billion for the construction of a modern bus and taxi park. This substantial investment, funded by the Uganda Cities and Municipalities Infrastructure Development Project (UCMID), is poised to address long-standing issues of congestion and disorganization within the town’s current transport facilities.

Officials anticipate that the new facility will not only decongest the town center but also stimulate job creation, streamline transport management, and boost municipal revenue. The project is slated for construction on a three-acre plot in Oryang Cell, Thatha Division, along the Nebbi–Arua Road, with construction expected to commence before the close of 2026.

The planned facility boasts a comprehensive design, including dedicated paved areas for buses, taxis, and private vehicles. Passengers can expect comfortable waiting sheds, modern access control systems, and enhanced security through high-mast solar-powered lighting. Beyond transport, the hub will integrate commercial spaces, retail shops, eateries, and essential services like a police post and administrative offices.

Municipal leaders have emphasized that the design prioritizes separating different transport modes, such as boda bodas, taxis, and buses, to alleviate current congestion. The Deputy Mayor, Musa Howard, confirmed that the physical plan has been approved by the executive committee and awaits council endorsement. The procurement process for a contractor is expected to take approximately three months, with a contract awarded by November or December, followed by site handover.

The project is expected to create numerous employment opportunities for local residents. Linus Okecha, Chairperson of the Nebbi Municipal Development Forum (MDF), highlighted the project’s potential to revitalize Nebbi’s appearance and foster economic growth. The UCMID program in Nebbi encompasses multiple sub-projects, including road network upgrades, drainage improvements, and green spaces, with the transport park being the immediate priority.

This development brings renewed hope to local traders who faced difficulties after a previous market project stalled due to funding issues. The municipality plans to implement the project in phases, with the bus and taxi park taking precedence.
