State Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Tom Aleru Aza, has initiated a campaign to re-energize cooperative societies within the Ma’di Sub-region. During a key stakeholders’ meeting in Adjumani, Aleru underscored the vital importance of these organizations in fostering household wealth creation, reducing poverty, and driving overall socio-economic transformation.

The initiative is part of a broader nationwide tour aimed at mobilizing communities to embrace the cooperative movement and breathe new life into dormant societies. “Our mission is to sensitize and mobilize Ugandans to embrace the cooperative movement. We want to revive dormant cooperative societies and ensure families move out of poverty through socio-economic transformation,” Aleru stated, urging active participation in cooperatives, the Parish Development Model, and Emyooga SACCOs.

Officials present highlighted the potential of strong cooperatives to accelerate economic progress by helping communities transition from subsistence farming to commercial production. However, challenges such as land encroachment, limited access to finance, inadequate value-addition equipment, and weak leadership structures were also identified.

In response, Minister Aleru pledged to take these concerns to Parliament, advocating for policy changes to bolster cooperative development. “These challenges require policy attention. I will present these issues before Parliament so that lasting solutions can be found to strengthen cooperative societies,” he assured.

Following the meeting, the Minister visited selected Parish Development Model and Emyooga SACCO groups in Adjumani to gain firsthand insights into their operations and challenges. The findings from this tour are expected to guide future government interventions aimed at strengthening cooperatives, enhancing value addition, improving access to finance, and ultimately increasing household incomes across the Ma’di Sub-region.
