Kamuli Man Sentenced to 5 Years for Stealing Three Cows, Ordered to Pay Shs8 Million

A resident of Kamuli District, identified as John Isabirye, 45, has received a five-year prison sentence for the theft of three cows. The Kamuli Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Paul Owino Abdnoson, also ordered Isabirye to pay Shs8 million in compensation to the owner of the stolen livestock, Mr. John Mitala.

The conviction stems from an incident on February 19, 2025, when Isabirye unlawfully took three cattle from Mr. Mitala’s farm in Bugeywa Parish, Butansi Sub-County. Notably, one of the stolen cows was pregnant and was slaughtered by the convict.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Owino emphasized that the harsh sentence is intended to serve as a deterrent against the growing problem of cattle theft in the region, which significantly impacts the livelihoods of farmers. He highlighted the importance of protecting property rights.

Mr. Mitala, the complainant, expressed relief and satisfaction with the court’s decision, stating that it offers hope to livestock farmers who have been victimized by widespread cattle theft. He urged other judicial officers to adopt similar firm stances in combating this crime.

This case comes at a time when law enforcement agencies in the Busoga Sub-region are increasing their efforts to tackle the surge in livestock theft, implementing various measures to safeguard farmers and their animals. The prosecution was led by Charles Akol.
