Jinja Highway Crash: Death Toll Climbs to Five

The number of people who died in a road accident at Kakira Junction along the Jinja-Iganga Highway has risen to five. The unfortunate incident occurred when a taxi, reportedly carrying passengers returning from overnight markets, collided with the back of a moving trailer.

The trailer involved in the crash did not stop and continued its journey, leaving the severely damaged taxi at the scene. Emergency services quickly transported the injured to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital. Doctors at the hospital worked diligently to save the lives of those admitted.

According to Dr. Pius Otim, who heads the hospital’s emergency ward, 17 patients with critical injuries and two deceased individuals were brought in shortly after the accident. Tragically, three more patients later succumbed to their severe injuries, elevating the total death toll to five. Dr. Otim also stated that three survivors remain in critical condition and are slated for transfer to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialized medical care.

Among the deceased was Birungi Robinah, a vendor at Jinja Central Market. Mr. Charles Busuulwa, the general secretary of the market, confirmed that many of the victims were vendors returning from their night market jobs. The damaged taxi has been taken to Kakira Police Station for further examination.

Following the accident, Sheikh Badru Mpaso of Mafubira called for enhanced government investment in emergency healthcare services, advocating for expanded emergency wards and improved capacity to handle mass casualty events.
