Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is increasingly being recognized not only as a violation of human rights but also as a direct contributor to severe health complications for women, particularly obstetric fistula. This condition, characterized by uncontrollable leakage of urine or feces, arises from prolonged or obstructed labor, often exacerbated by the scarring and narrowing of the vaginal canal caused by FGM.

New research indicates a strong correlation between undergoing FGM and the likelihood of developing obstetric fistula. The procedures, which involve the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons, can lead to significant scarring and reduced elasticity of the vaginal tissues. During childbirth, these compromised tissues are more susceptible to tearing and damage, increasing the risk of the fistulas forming.

Obstetric fistula is a major public health concern, particularly in regions where FGM is prevalent. The physical and psychological toll on affected women is immense, often leading to social isolation, depression, and poverty. The study underscores the urgent need for intensified efforts to eradicate FGM and provide comprehensive care for survivors.

Health professionals are calling for greater awareness and stronger legal frameworks to prevent FGM and support women who suffer from its consequences. Addressing this issue requires a multi-faceted approach, including community education, healthcare interventions, and support services for victims. The findings emphasize that FGM poses a grave threat to women’s reproductive health and overall well-being.
