DPP Accuses Lawyer Eron Kiiza of Contempt Over Besigye Trial Social Media Posts

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is pursuing legal action against Eron Kiiza, a defense lawyer in the treason case involving Dr. Kizza Besigye, accusing him of contempt of court. The DPP contends that Kiiza made several posts on his X (formerly Twitter) account that are prejudicial to the ongoing trial and could undermine the administration of justice.

Court documents reveal that the prosecution has identified specific posts made by Kiiza in July 2026 that allegedly discuss and question the credibility of a prosecution witness, Andrew Wilson, an American national. The State argues these publications violate the sub judice rule by inviting public debate on a matter still before the court.

The DPP is requesting the High Court to declare Kiiza guilty of criminal contempt, seeking punitive measures such as a prison sentence or a substantial fine. Additionally, the prosecution wants Kiiza to permanently remove the disputed posts, refrain from further public comments on the trial’s evidence or merits, and publish a court-sanctioned apology for seven consecutive days.

The application is supported by an affidavit from Detective Inspector of Police Benedict Odyek, who states that Kiiza’s posts about witness Andrew Wilson were derogatory and referred to him as a liar. The State maintains these digital communications pose a “clear, real and present risk” to the trial, potentially intimidating witnesses and jeopardizing justice.

Kiiza, in response, has stated that these proceedings are an attempt to silence him and restrict public access to information regarding the Besigye case, calling the application unconstitutional.

This is not the first time Kiiza has faced contempt charges; he was previously convicted and sentenced by the General Court Martial in January 2025 while representing Besigye in a related matter. He was later released on bail pending an appeal.
