Cambridge Professor Jason Arday Resigns Amidst Plagiarism Allegations

Professor Jason Arday of the University of Cambridge has stepped down from his position “with immediate effect” as the institution investigated claims of plagiarism and inaccuracies in his academic record. The university confirmed an investigation was launched after “new information” emerged concerning his qualifications and honorary appointments.

Arday, who made history in 2023 as Cambridge’s youngest Black professor, acknowledged that his work contained errors. However, he asserted that he had faced intense public scrutiny and personal attacks, stating, “I am not a liar.” These statements follow media reports that questioned his achievements and detailed allegations of plagiarism within his PhD thesis.

In a statement shared by the Good Law Project, Arday expressed that his professorship was “the greatest professional privilege of my life” but acknowledged that “the personal cost becomes too great.” He emphasized that his resignation was not an admission of guilt or a loss of faith in scholarship, but rather a step taken for his “own wellbeing, for my family, and for those who have stood by me.”

The controversy was initially amplified by US researcher Nathan Cofnas, who claimed plagiarism detection software found numerous copied passages in Arday’s work. Cofnas also raised questions about Arday’s reported endurance feats, which were said to have raised significant funds for charity.

While Arday admitted to some errors, partly attributing them to his autism and a reliance on mimicry, he suggested a “well-orchestrated and co-ordinated campaign” against him, possibly racially motivated, aiming to target diversity and inclusion policies. He maintained that similar scrutiny would reveal errors in other academics’ work.

Cambridge University stated its inquiry is ongoing, handling separate complaints of academic misconduct in line with university policy. Jesus College, where Arday is a fellow, is conducting its own parallel investigation. Despite the allegations, publisher Simon & Schuster defended Arday, expressing pride in his professionalism and integrity ahead of his memoir’s release.
