12-Year-Old Pupil Electrocuted by Exposed Power Line in Nansana

Tragedy struck in Nansana’s Katooke A Village as a 12-year-old primary school pupil, Aron Katimbo Muzeeyi, was electrocuted by a live, exposed electricity wire. The Primary Two student at Glorious Primary School was reportedly walking home for lunch when he slipped and fell onto the dangerous wire.

Residents expressed fury and accused the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) of negligence. They claim repeated warnings about the dilapidated state of power lines in the area have gone unheeded. Local council leader Moses Gitta lamented that several lives, particularly those of children, have been lost due to similar hazards.

“We call upon UEDCL to urgently repair these lines before more lives are lost,” Gitta stated, emphasizing that only authorized personnel should handle electrical repairs to prevent further accidents. The community is demanding immediate action from UEDCL.

The deceased’s family is appealing to the government and UEDCL for financial assistance to cover the costs of retrieving the body from the mortuary and transporting it for burial in Kalungu District.

Police have begun an investigation into the incident, with the body being taken for a postmortem examination. This incident occurs over a year after UEDCL took over electricity distribution operations, with expectations of improved infrastructure maintenance. An acting UEDCL spokesperson acknowledged the tragedy and stated their safety team is investigating the cause of the electrocution.
