Police Apprehend 11 Taxi Drivers for Dangerous Loading on Masaka Highway

In a targeted night operation, police apprehended eleven commuter taxi drivers on the Masaka Highway. The arrests were made at the Maya checkpoint as authorities intensify efforts to curb dangerous loading, a practice identified as a significant factor in fatal road crashes.

Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura stated that many drivers attempt to overload vehicles under the cover of darkness, mistakenly believing checkpoints are less active at night. However, these intelligence-led operations have proven effective in intercepting such offenders.

“11 commuter taxi drivers were intercepted and arrested for dangerous loading during a night operation conducted @Maya checkpoint along Masaka Highway,” Kananura confirmed. He added that those arrested will face charges under the Traffic & Road Safety Act.

Kananura emphasized that dangerous loading, especially at night, remains a common traffic offense. He issued a stern warning to all motorists involved in this illegal activity, assuring them that the crackdown will continue and offenders will be prosecuted.

He further explained that overloading compromises a vehicle’s stability by altering its center of gravity. This instability significantly increases the risk of catastrophic events such as tyre bursts, loss of control, vehicles veering off the road, or even overturning, often leading to severe injuries or fatalities.

Police stressed that overloading endangers not only the passengers within the vehicle but also poses a substantial threat to other road users, particularly on high-speed highways. They urged drivers to prioritize safety and human lives over potential profit.

“No journey is worth risking human life. We will continue conducting intelligence-led operations, both day and night to ensure that all road users comply with the law and that lives are protected,” Kananura concluded. These ongoing operations aim to enhance road safety nationwide.
