Kassanda Gold Site Reopens for 3,000 Prospectors After Four-Month Ban

After a four-month hiatus, the Mugobwa Katuugo Gold Exploration Site in Kassanda District has officially reopened, signaling a return to work for more than 3,000 artisanal prospectors.

The decision by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development follows a suspension implemented on April 11, 2026, when it was discovered that exploration activities were proceeding without the necessary licenses.

Prospectors, who rely heavily on the site for their livelihoods, have been given a 12-month grace period to complete the legal and administrative processes required for formalizing their small-scale mining operations. This approval came after authorities assessed that significant progress had been made in meeting the government’s conditions.

Leaders at the site, including Fulugye Mukasa, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to resume work, noting the severe economic impact the suspension had on families, with many struggling to afford basic necessities and school fees. Mukasa urged all prospectors to comply with government regulations by joining recognized associations to ensure continued, uninterrupted operations.

SSP Fred Kidima of the Mineral Protection Police commended the prospectors for their patience during the suspension period. He emphasized that the 12-month grace period is conditional and warned that non-compliance with the law or the ministry’s directives could lead to a renewed suspension of activities.

The reopening is expected to alleviate economic hardship for thousands of residents and allow for continued government oversight in formalizing artisanal mining in the region.
