High Court Details Roles of Nine Convicts in Susan Magara Kidnap and Murder

The High Court has detailed the precise roles played by nine individuals convicted in the brutal kidnapping and murder of businesswoman Susan Magara. Justice Alex Mackay Ajiji found that the perpetrators operated as a unified criminal network, with each member assigned a crucial part in the elaborate scheme.

The court sentenced Nakandi Hajjara and Buvumbo Abaas Musa to death, citing their direct involvement in Magara’s killing. Nakandi was found to have provided a safe house for the victim, guarded her, and ultimately ordered her death after fearing identification. Buvumbo was responsible for the most violent acts against Magara, including cutting off her fingers, injecting her with ketamine, and suffocating her.

The remaining seven convicts received life imprisonment sentences. While not directly involved in the killing, their actions were deemed essential to the crime’s execution. Bukenya Ismail, an imam, played a key organizational role, hosting planning meetings and managing ransom distribution.

Kato Hassan Miiro and Wasswa Hussein were convicted for guarding Magara during her captivity. Kyewolwa Abubaker was found guilty of collecting the $200,000 ransom, yet the gang proceeded to murder Magara despite receiving the payment. Lubega Yusuf participated in the kidnapping by driving group members and assisting in the abduction, while Ssali Muzamir also guarded the detention site.

Justice Ajiji emphasized that the varying roles did not lessen individual responsibility, as all acted with a common criminal intent. The planning, abduction, ransom demands, and murder were interconnected acts, making all convicts accountable for Magara’s tragic death.

Susan Magara, daughter of businessman Eria Magara, was kidnapped on February 7, 2018, and her body was found days later in Wakiso District after a ransom demand was made.
