Buganda Kingdom and Rotary Unite for Mobile Water Clinic on Lake Victoria Islands

Buganda Kingdom, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Kampala Ssese Highland, is intensifying efforts to fund a critical mobile water clinic project. The initiative aims to bridge the healthcare gap for communities residing on the numerous islands of Lake Victoria, specifically the Ssese and Buvuma archipelagos.

Many islanders face substantial difficulties in accessing medical services due to limited and unreliable water transport. This often forces residents to undertake arduous journeys across the water in search of basic healthcare, a challenge the mobile clinic seeks to resolve.

“Travelling across the water in search of medical care is extremely difficult because water transport is limited,” stated Joseph Kawuki, Buganda Kingdom’s Minister for Local Governments, Kabaka’s Tours and External Affairs. “That is why the Buganda Kingdom, together with Rotary, came up with this initiative to establish a mobile water clinic that will reach remote islands, provide treatment, and conduct various health outreach camps.”

The project, which requires an estimated US$44,600 for construction and essential medical equipment, has set a fundraising deadline of September 30, 2026. Both Buganda Kingdom and Rotary are appealing for support from the government, organizations, and individuals to ensure the success of this life-saving endeavor.

Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko, Minister for Social Development and Health in Buganda Kingdom, emphasized healthcare as a key priority within the Kingdom’s development agenda. Ivan Kasambeko of the Rotary Club of Kampala Ssese Highland described the mobile clinic as a “transformative project that will save lives by bringing essential healthcare services closer to people living on the islands.”

The mobile clinic is designed to serve all age groups and will also facilitate health outreach programs in areas that struggle with conventional healthcare access.
