Wakiso District Boosts Water Access with Shs 1.18 Billion Piped Water Project

The government has allocated Shs1.18 billion to extend piped water services to several villages within Mumyuka Sub-county in Wakiso District. This significant investment is poised to benefit an estimated 7,000 residents, providing them with much-needed access to clean and safe water.

The project, which commenced in the 2025/2026 Financial Year, focuses on expanding the water supply from Lukwanga Village to Ntinda, Kyeberese, Muyenje, Jimbo, and Nabukalu villages. The completion deadline is set for January 2027.

Key infrastructure developments already in place include a new production borehole, a 34-kilowatt solar-powered pumping system, a dedicated powerhouse, a guard house, and a toilet facility. Additionally, a 2.4-kilometre transmission pipeline has been laid, and an 86,000-litre reservoir tank has been installed.

During a recent site inspection, Wakiso District LCV Chairperson, Eng. Ian Kyeyune, urged the District Water Engineer and the contractor to prioritize timely completion and uphold high construction standards. “Work with speed, but maintain quality. Use the right materials, engage local people where possible, and keep us updated with progress reports so that by January 2027 we will commission a complete and fully functioning water system,” Eng. Kyeyune stated.

He emphasized the project’s potential to significantly improve public health, reduce the burden on women and children who often travel long distances for water, and enhance overall sanitation in the sub-county.

Community members have pledged their support, agreeing to contribute Shs100 per jerrycan towards maintenance and to actively protect the new water infrastructure from vandalism. This collaborative approach aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of the water supply.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader objective of enhancing service delivery and improving public health in rural communities across the country.
