Uganda Law Society to Investigate Disappearance of Activist Sam Mugumya

Leaders from the Uganda Law Society (ULS) have committed to finding answers regarding the disappearance of political activist Sam Mugumya. This pledge follows a visit to Mugumya’s mother, Edinansi Katungwesi, in Rukungiri District, who has endured nearly a year of anguish since her son vanished.
Mugumya, a member of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and former aide to Dr. Kizza Besigye, was reportedly abducted by unknown armed men on August 26, 2025, in Mbarara. Family and supporters allege he was forced into a “drone” vehicle by security operatives, though security agencies have denied holding him.
During the ULS delegation’s visit, Katungwesi shared her deep distress, exacerbated by a recent video circulating that allegedly shows her son in poor physical condition. “My son had committed no offence, and no one in the village had any problem with him. Let the God who gave me my son return him,” she pleaded, urging the government to either release him or produce him in court.
Anthony Asiimwe, ULS Vice President, assured Mugumya’s mother that the society would relentlessly pursue the matter. “We shall do our best to help her find out whether he is alive or dead,” Asiimwe stated, emphasizing the need to respect Mugumya’s dignity and constitutional rights. He called for his immediate release or production in court if any offense has been committed.
Relatives and supporters echoed these sentiments, condemning the pattern of enforced disappearances and demanding Mugumya’s swift appearance before a court. Mugumya, who had intended to contest the Rukungiri Municipality parliamentary seat, has not been seen publicly since his alleged abduction.
